The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) comprises eight countries of South Asia, i.e. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka. The idea of regional cooperation in South Asia was first mooted in May by Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman. In the final phase, the Heads of State or Government met at the first SAARC Summit in Dhaka on December and decided to establish the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
